Caroline Wozniacki defeats Maria Sharapova at WTA Finals
Danish Caroline Wozniacki continued her impressive play as she defeated Maria Sharapova in a three set thriller 7-6 6-7 6-2 at the WTA Finals. The 24-year-old picked up her second straight victory against the Russian who had not lost a match since the Wuhan Open in September.
Wozniacki was able to take advantage of the 76 unforced errors and 15 double faults committed by her opponent. While she did struggle with her serve in the first two sets, she was able to compensate with her fantastic service game and get under Sharapova’s skin.
“I’m feeling a little tired!” Wozniacki said in her on-court interview after the match which lasted more than three hours and 13 minutes. “But it was a great match. The first one is always tough, getting your rhythm and getting used to everything out there, but in the third set I felt like I really stepped it up and really started being aggressive and going for my shots more.
After the first two sets went to tiebreak, the Danish dominated the decisive third set in which she won 68% of her first serve points and saved four of her six break points. On the other hand, Sharapova committed nine double faults and only landed 58% of her first serves.
“It’s happened the last couple of times I played against her,” Sharapova said of multiple mistakes. “The chances that you have when you’re serving for a set, it’s in your hands to finish that off. When you give those chances back, a player that’s top 10 in the world and has the experience as Caroline does, you’re not just going to run away with the match.”
The loss also reduced the chances of Sharapova claiming the Number one ranking. In order for her to finish on top in the tour, she will need to reach the Finals at Singapore and hope Serena Williams drops her two group matches.
